Two Pacoima politicians who were born and raised in Pacoima and started their political career in the area won their elections yesterday.  Alex Padilla was elected as California’s  32nd Secretary of State, and Tony Cárdenas was re-elected to the United States House of Representatives to represent the 29th district (that includes Pacoima, San Fernando, Sylmar, Arleta, Panorama City, Van Nuys, and parts of North Hollywood).

Padilla won over Pete Peterson with 52.5 percent of the votes.  Cárdenas won with a landslide over William O’ Callaghan Leader with 74.5 percent of the vote.

Complete election results can be found here.

Before serving in Congress, Cárdenas was a Los Angeles City councilmember representing District 6, and, prior to that, a member of the California State Assembly.  Padilla also served in the Los Angeles City Council and was previously a California State Senator.  During their entire political careers, they have represented Pacoima.

Padilla’s campaign ran on the platform of increasing voter turnout and transparency by using online tools like the Internet, email, and text messages, and also restricting political campaign contributions and advertising.  He also promised to make it easier for small businesses to open; within five days; he said, after filing online.

Cárdenas’ priorities that he included in the official sample ballot include “(1) creating more Middle Class jobs; (2) passing a responsible budget that protects seniors, (3) reforming the juvenile justice system, (4) passing comprehensive immigration reform, and (5) providing access to affordable health care.”

Now that Padilla is elected and Cárdenas re-elected, will they follow through?  How can we hold them accountable?
